Mayors Outline Next Steps for Voluntary Amalgamation

The workshop “Perspectives and Actions for Voluntary Amalgamation in the Context of Public Administration Reform,” held on October 17–18, 2025, brought together mayors from across the country, along with representatives of the State Chancellery and Parliament, to discuss concrete steps for advancing the process of voluntary amalgamation.

The sessions focused on defining key directions for action and developing a coordinated plan for 2026, setting clear priorities, identified resources, and shared responsibilities between local and central authorities.

According to Diana Chiriac, Head of the Local Public Administration Directorate within the State Chancellery, “This is a meeting of mayors for mayors – a genuine opportunity to address the challenges faced by villages, from infrastructure and sanitation to more efficient public services.”

Participants emphasized that voluntary amalgamation is an inevitable step toward modernizing public administration. “Many small municipalities lack the necessary resources and capacities. By joining forces, we can become more efficient and deliver better services to our residents,” said Alexandru Bujorean, Mayor of Leova.

The amalgamation process is gradually expanding across the country – from Cahul to Ungheni and Telenești – confirming the strong local will to build a modern and responsive administration that meets community needs.
